Stranded in Hong Kong

It was the 29th of July and I was on my way back to Dubai. The check-in cue at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila was like a sleeping anaconda, it wasn’t moving and it was very long. Finally it was my turn, my baggage weight exceeded my limit and I had to unload a few kilos and gave them to my dad. Thanks dad!

We were held at the waiting area for around 1 hour more, they said that the plane is delayed but they will serve snacks in a little while. And so they did.

At the Hong Kong International Airport, we arrived past 11pm and I searched for the Cathay Pacific check-in counter and found it with another long, almost-not-moving cue. I waited and waited and was worried because it’s nearing midnight and the Dubai flight is leaving 30 minutes past 12. People were shouting at the poor Cathay staff. There was a storm with lightnings and thunders inside the airport.

My turn once again came and was attended to. I turned out to be the coordinator for the 9 other Pinoys behind me. We were entertained as a group. Our group was left behind by our flight to Dubai which we paid for a month ago. We were told that they overbooked the flight and it was their fault and that they will solve the problem. And so they did-after 2 hours.

Here was their solution:

1. They booked us on the next flight, which is 16 hours later – on business class.

2. They booked us at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong while waiting for our flight.

3. They gave us a few HK$ to spend.

What happened next? We became instant tourists! All of us, 10 Pinoys were first-time visitors of Hong Kong outside the HKIA. I got to spend the night at a 5-star hotel; got to walk in busy HK streets and bought some souvenirs, a digital camera and a cool phone; got to experience Cathay’s business class – all for the price of an economy ticket and a lot of cue-lining and plane-waiting.

Reached Dubai safely and with a tummy filled to the brim. Hehehe.

Indeed, God is in control.

Tender Loving Care

Hi all!

I was with my wife yesterday at a shopping mall in Dagupan City. I was amazed at the similarities of the differences of customer care and products in the Philippines and Dubai.

We went to this American burger chain and ordered chicken and burgers… man, it is very small, i mean the serving is so small compared to the servings given back in Dubai. ¬†And the bill went into the hundreds of pesos. Honestly I was dismayed.

We went to look for task lighting for our dining area at home, and we found a very classic, very nice decorated drop light… it suited my taste. But voila! it had defects on it although it went past the 1000 peso mark. I still bought it.

We also went shopping (or tried to) for shoes, at a favorite boutique, I saw a fairly-priced pair of sneakers, tried it, liked it… it was comfortable. But hey, I was told that the price tag on the display shoe is lower than the actual pair i am about to purchase… Why? Apparently, the saleslady told me that I was out-of-luck (as if I believe in it) because of a single letter difference between the 2 stocks. We ended up leaving the place more dismayed and empty-handed.

Before going back home, we had dinner at an all-Pinoy (chinoy really) burger chain and ordered burger with TLC (Tomato-Lettuce-Cheese) I was asked to wait for 5 minutes after which I was given a burger with… TL… where’s the C??? I chanced to see the supervisor and told her about it, in no time, she replaced it with a new one… with double TLC… Tomato-Lettuce-Cheese and Tender Loving Care.

Looking at the bright side of things, back in Dubai, the food servings are huge and the quality is almost impeccable, but how they treat customers is no match for the Pinoy’s treatment to their customers. This very thing compliments what is lacking in our product quality. It is a source of satisfaction for me. ¬†Tender Loving Care.
